GG101 – 8-Hour BSIS Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force

Required to apply for a California Guard Card

GG101 is the first step for anyone who wants to become a licensed security guard in California. This BSIS-mandated course covers your legal authority, limitations, and responsibilities as a security professional.

  • Power to Arrest – legal authority, liability, private person’s arrest, and ethics
  • Appropriate Use of Force – state standards, de-escalation, and decision making
  • Cultural competency and working professionally with the public
  • Basic officer safety and communicating with law enforcement

To pass GG101, students must complete all modules and pass the exam with a score of 100%, as required by BSIS.

GG102 – 16-Hour BSIS Mandatory Skills Training

Required within 30 days of starting work as a security guard

GG102 covers the four mandatory subjects required by BSIS to prepare guards for real-world post assignments. This training is usually taken after you receive your Guard Card and begin working for a security company.

  • Public Relations & Professional Conduct – customer service, ethics, and professionalism
  • Observation & Documentation – patrol techniques, note-taking, incident and daily reports
  • Communication & Radios – radio procedures, emergency communication, and teamwork
  • Legal Aspects & Liability – civil/criminal liability, BSIS rules, and legal responsibilities

This course builds a solid foundation for guards working in apartments, warehouses, retail, offices, schools, and event sites.

GG103 – 16-Hour BSIS Elective Skills Training

Required within 6 months of licensure to complete the 32-hour Skills Training

GG103 completes the BSIS 32-hour Skills Training requirement by focusing on elective topics chosen from the official BSIS list. We tailor these electives to the types of posts you are most likely to work.

Required every year after your first year as a licensed guard

GG104 keeps you compliant with BSIS by providing the 8 hours of yearly continuing education required for active security guards, including at least 2 hours of Appropriate Use of Force review.

SB1626 – 24-Hour School Security Officer Training

Required for security officers working in K–12 school districts or California community colleges

SB1626 is a state-required course for school security officers. It focuses on keeping students and staff safe while understanding the special legal and behavioral issues in a school setting. This course is offered by Veritas Security in partnership with approved training providers.

Requirements to Become a Security Guard in California

To qualify for a California BSIS Security Guard Registration (also called a “Guard Card”), applicants must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Be legally authorized to work in the United States
  • Have no disqualifying criminal convictions (felonies or certain misdemeanors)
  • Complete the 8-hour BSIS Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force course
  • Submit Live Scan fingerprints to DOJ & FBI using the correct BSIS form
  • Submit a Guard Card application and fees to BSIS

Step-by-Step Guard Card Process

  1. Take the 8-Hour Course (GG101).
    Complete the BSIS Power to Arrest & Appropriate Use of Force class and pass the exam with 100% as required by BSIS.
  2. Complete Live Scan Fingerprinting.
    Use the correct BSIS Live Scan form, bring valid ID, and get your fingerprints submitted electronically to DOJ and FBI.
  3. Apply for Your Guard Card.
    Submit your Security Guard Registration application to BSIS online (recommended) or by mail.
  4. Start Working Once Approved.
    After BSIS approves your application, you can work as a guard while you wait for your physical card, as long as you carry a printed approval and valid photo ID.
  5. Finish Your 32 Hours of Skills Training.
    Complete 16 hours within your first 30 days (GG102) and another 16 hours within 6 months (GG103).
  6. Complete 8 Hours of Training Every Year (GG104).
    Stay compliant by taking 8 hours of continuing education annually, including an Appropriate Use of Force refresher.

  • Train and complete your fingerprints in the same place
